Mexico beats Korea to be the first to qualify for the knockout stage

Mexico has secured their spot in the World Cup knockout stage by defeating South Korea 1-0, thanks to Luis Romo’s sole goal. This victory makes the hosts the first team to confirm their place in the Round of 32.

In the match held on Friday (June 19) at 7 AM Bangladesh time, both teams displayed attacking football from the start. However, despite creating multiple opportunities, neither side managed to score in the first half, leading to a goalless draw at halftime.

The tide of the match turned right after the break. In the 50th minute, Luis Romo capitalized on a mistake by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu to give Mexico the lead. Kim lost control of the ball after colliding with a teammate outside the box while attempting to clear a cross. Romo seized the opportunity, netting a superb volley.

After conceding the goal, South Korea desperately pushed for an equalizer. However, the Asian team repeatedly failed to breach Mexico’s disciplined defense. Ultimately, Romo’s single goal proved to be the decisive factor in the match.

With this victory, Mexico continued their impressive run in the World Cup. They also maintained their dominance over South Korea; the Koreans have not secured a win against Mexico since 2006. While their last encounter ended in a 2-2 draw last year, South Korea left the field without any points this time.
